The world is bigger than the itinerary

Salt flats. Sacred mountains. Jungle rivers at first light. Photography from the far corners of the map, shot the slow way: on foot, at altitude, before the crowds wake up.

The ethos

Go far. Go early. Earn the frame. Every image here cost something: a 4 a.m. alarm, a 15,000 foot pass, a night bus across the altiplano.

90+ destination galleries/ 500+ stock licenses sold/ 31 of 63 US national parks/ Featured by the tourism boards of Bolivia and Peru

The largest salt flat on Earth. After rain it becomes a mirror with no horizon; in the dry season it cracks into geometry. Nine frames from the flats and the flamingo lagoons of the altiplano. This set was featured by Bolivia's national tourism board.

Five days under a mountain the Inca treated as a god. The Salkantay trek trades the Inca Trail crowds for a glacier pass, turquoise lakes, and a long descent through cloud forest toward Machu Picchu. Work from this trek was featured by Peru's national tourism board.

About
"The camera is the excuse. The trip is the point."

Jonathan Byrne is a travel and wildlife photographer based in South Florida. He documents nature, culture, and everyday life in the places most itineraries skip, from Bolivian salt flats to Japanese pilgrim trails.

His work has been featured by the national tourism boards of Bolivia and Peru, and his stock portfolio has sold more than 500 licenses worldwide. He has visited 31 of the 63 US national parks and collects the official brochure from every one.

Off the trail he is a physician in training and an ultrarunner. The camera comes everywhere. The tripod comes when it earns its weight.
